Born in Cork, Ireland, Daniel Maclise studied at the Cork Society of Arts, before moving to London in 1826 to attend the Royal Academy Schools. A model student, he won prizes for his draughtsmanship. He would become the leading British history painter of his period, and is best known for his fresco work in the House of Lords.
Alongside his successful career as an artist, Maclise also worked as an illustrator; contributing to Fraser’s Magazine, and illustrating works by authors including Milton, Tennyson, Thomas Moore and Charles Dickens.
The University of Reading Art Collection holds one drawing by Daniel Maclise, entitled ‘Study of a Seated Woman’.
